Spa etiquette: how to behave in the wellness area

Quellenhof Passeier:
spa etiquette

We give special importance to wellness at Quellenhof Luxury Resort Passeier. Are you wondering whether your children are allowed in the sauna or what time you should arrive for your beauty treatment at the spa? Our spa etiquette guide provides answers to these and many other questions. You can discover everything you need to know about the dos and don’ts for a successful wellness experience here.

Is the wellness area a quiet zone?

The wellness area is designed to help you relax and unwind. Nothing is more disruptive than ringing phones or loud conversations. We therefore recommend that you switch off your mobile phone and refrain from using it. In fact, it’s best not to take your smartphone into the spa area at all. This way, you can focus entirely on the moment, without any distractions.

What should I wear in the wellness area?

Your comfort is the top priority in the wellness area. Please wear a bathrobe and slippers in the public areas of the spa. We recommend using towels or special sauna towels when using the saunas and steam rooms. Swimwear is required in the pool areas. In the rest of the hotel, however, swimwear is not permitted. The nude areas in the wellness area are clearly marked as such.

What are the rules in the sauna?

To ensure that all guests can enjoy their time in the sauna, we ask that you observe Nordic sauna etiquette. For hygiene reasons, we kindly ask you to enter the sauna without any clothes on. However, you should always use a towel or a special sauna towel to cover your entire seat or lounger. This is also for hygiene reasons – for your sake and for the person who will be occupying your spot next. Mobile phones and electronic devices must be left outside – it’s all about rest and relaxation here. Please also make sure to be as quiet and efficient as possible when entering and leaving the sauna, and avoid making any sudden movements. Before using the sauna, you should have a thorough shower and then enter the sauna completely dry. You should also keep a reasonable distance from the person next to you in the sauna so that everyone can relax in peace and no one feels crowded. A sauna session should last no longer than 15 to 20 minutes to avoid putting too much strain on your cardiovascular system – especially at higher temperatures.

How should I behave in the relaxation room?

As the name suggests, the relaxation room is a place of rest and tranquillity where you can leave the stresses of everyday life behind. To ensure a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere for all guests, we ask that you avoid loud conversations and refrain from making phone calls. Guests using this space would like to enjoy the peace and quiet. You should also put your mobile phone on silent or switch it off completely while in the relaxation room to avoid making any noise that disturbs the peace. Please ensure that your movements are calm and considerate so you do not wake or disturb other guests unnecessarily. By following these simple rules, you can help make the relaxation room a restorative place for everyone.

How do I use the steam room properly?

The steam room is an important feature of many wellness facilities, as it not only promotes relaxation but also has beneficial effects on the body, such as improving blood circulation and cleansing the skin. To ensure you can enjoy the steam room to the full while showing consideration for other guests, there are a few simple rules of conduct to follow.

First and foremost, it is important to enter the steam room in a relaxed, calm manner. The high humidity and gentle warmth in the steam room have a particularly soothing effect, which is why it is advisable to breathe calmly while you are there and to avoid loud conversation.

Another important point is hygiene. Before entering the steam room, you must take a shower to wash away any dirt and lotions from your body. It is also advisable to bring a towel to place on the seats. You should also avoid spending too long in the steam room – 15 to 20 minutes is enough to feel the benefits without putting too much strain on your cardiovascular system.

When you leave the steam room, it is advisable to rinse your body with cool water to help stabilise your circulation. After the steam bath, you should also drink plenty of water to replenish lost fluids and support your body’s regeneration.

What is the proper way to behave in a Finnish sauna?

For hygiene reasons, it is customary to enter the Finnish sauna without swimwear. However, please use a towel or a special sauna towel to cover the seat or lounger. This way, you can enjoy the relaxing atmosphere to the full while being considerate of other guests. To ensure everyone can relax as much as possible, we kindly ask you to refrain from talking and to be considerate of the other guests. This creates a calm, respectful atmosphere that allows everyone to enjoy the soothing warmth.

Children in the sauna: is that possible?

At our wellness hotel near Merano, the whole family can enjoy relaxing moments in the sauna. Guesthouse P actually has both a nude and a clothed area for families with children.

Is it OK to drink in the sauna?

While you are in the spa area, it is important to drink plenty of fluids to help your body function at its best. Before and after using the sauna, we recommend drinking plenty of water to replace the fluids lost through sweating and to keep your body hydrated. Short breaks between sauna sessions are the perfect opportunity to enjoy a refreshing drink.

How do I book a beauty treatment?

To ensure a thoroughly relaxing experience, we kindly ask you to book your beauty treatments in advance. This way, we can ensure that your preferred appointment is available and that you receive our experts’ full attention. Our reception team is happy to help with booking appointments and provide personalised advice. You can also book appointments by phone or online. Our spa team is on hand to advise you and help you choose the treatment that’s right for you. We recommend booking treatments as early as possible to ensure you get your preferred slot, particularly during peak times. Please remember to arrive on time so that you can enjoy the full treatment. Should your plans change, please let us know in good time so that we can reschedule your appointment accordingly.

I've booked a massage. When should I arrive at the spa?

To ensure you have a relaxing experience, we recommend that you arrive at the spa around 10 minutes before your appointment. This will give you plenty of time to check in at your leisure and enter the spa area without any rush. This short waiting time allows you to soak up the relaxing atmosphere of the spa and prepare yourself mentally for the treatment ahead.

Should you unexpectedly arrive late, we reserve the right to shorten your treatment time accordingly out of consideration for other guests, so that everyone can enjoy their treatments to the full.

What is appropriate clothing for a massage?

It is best to come to your massage wearing a bathrobe and slippers. During the treatment, you will usually be asked to undress, but only to the extent necessary for the massage. Our staff will ensure that you remain well covered and in a comfortable position throughout the treatment. This way, you can relax completely and enjoy the treatment.

Should I tip the spa staff?

Every member of our spa staff, from massage therapists to beauticians, enjoys receiving your appreciation, including in the form of a tip, which you are, of course, free to give. A typical amount is between 5% and 10% of the treatment cost, but you are free to adjust this amount as you see fit. A friendly “thank you” is also welcome.

Can I have a drink during a massage?

We kindly ask you to refrain from drinking during the treatment so as not to interrupt the relaxing effects of the therapy. We will be happy to provide you with a refreshing drink before or after the massage to ensure you feel completely at ease at all times.

Souvenir or theft: what can I take with me?

We’re delighted if you like our little gifts, such as soaps or toiletries, so much that you’d like to take them home with you – they’re meant for you. However, other items such as towels, bathrobes, or decorative items are part of the hotel’s inventory and must remain in the hotel.

Reserving sun loungers by the pool: allowed or not?

To ensure that all guests can enjoy a relaxing experience, we kindly ask you not to reserve sun loungers by the pool for extended periods. Towels left unattended on sun loungers for any length of time will be removed by our team so that other guests have the opportunity to find a spot.

Walking through the hotel in a bathrobe: is that allowed?

You are welcome to walk between your room and the spa area in your bathrobe. Most hotels are designed so that you don’t have to walk through public areas such as the dining room or the bar on your way there.

Straight from breakfast to the sauna in your bathrobe?

In public areas, such as the dining room, we ask that you wear appropriate clothing and do not come wearing a bathrobe.

Wet towels: where should I put them?

Please leave your wet towels in the designated areas in the wellness area, such as the signed drying stations or the baskets provided. This way, you can help keep the area tidy and pleasant for all guests.
